Include anything that will bring your story to life for your reader. Some of the same things that Walpole mentioned in his novels are still valid today, even more so those brought by Shelley or Stevenson. That doesn’t mean those things have no explanation, of course, but it has to be taken on faith that there is a “reasonable” explanation that is simply unknown. Under Heaven was actually the first GGK book I read, so I'm always happy to see more people picking that one up.
